Getting started

Import your first book and settle into reading

Read the guide, then import your books

The shelf includes a Jianjing Reader User Guide. Open it to try page turning, typography, bookmarks and notes. No novels are bundled. Choose your own TXT or EPUB files in Transfer → Import from Files, or transfer from a computer on the same Wi-Fi network. Once saved locally, books can be read offline. You can delete the guide like any other book; it will not reappear on the next launch. The full guide is always available in Settings → User Guide.

Three main pages

Library manages and opens books. Import adds files or starts Wi-Fi transfer. Me shows your reading history, Trash, Vault and Settings.

Start or resume reading

Choose TXT or EPUB files in Import → From Files. After reviewing the results, tap View library to find this batch, then tap a cover to read. Your position is saved when turning pages, leaving a book or moving to the background. Reopening restores the text position; page numbers may change with font size or orientation.

The center Library button

Tap Jianjing Reader at the top of Library for a short saying, your recent book and reading summary. Resume reading or open statistics, calendar, Vault and this guide. Feature Customization can hide some entries.

Files and formats

TXT, EPUB and opening from the Files app

Import from device or cloud drive

Select multiple TXT or EPUB files from your device or cloud drive in Import → From Files. Each batch shows ready, indexing, skipped and failed counts. View results lists filenames and reasons. File saved; building contents means the original is stored locally. Only Ready to read counts as success. Books never open automatically. Cloud files may need downloading first.

Open from Files

Long-press a book in Files, choose Share or Open With, and select Jianjing Reader. If it is absent, check More in the sharing list or use Import from Files in the app.

Duplicates and filenames

Settings → Library Settings → Import controls duplicate-name filtering, placing new imports first and keeping the full filename. To import different books with the same filename, disable duplicate filtering or rename the file.

When chapters cannot be recognized

If readable text has no recognizable chapters, it is displayed as full-text segments. Contents explains that chapter parsing failed; reading and turning pages still work. Damaged or unreadable files need replacing with a readable TXT or EPUB.

Results and retries

Retry failures in View results. Saved originals are parsed again without creating another book. If a source is unavailable, select it again. Same-name skips identify the file. Results stay on this device and unfinished imports recover after a restart. View library shows this batch’s readable and indexing books; All books returns to your full library.

Wi-Fi transfer

Upload on the same network without keeping the transfer panel open

Start a transfer

Connect your iPhone or iPad and computer to the same Wi-Fi. Open Import → Wi-Fi Transfer and allow Local Network access. Enter the full displayed address in a computer browser, or scan the QR code with another device. Select or drop TXT / EPUB files without a verification code. The limit is 512 MB per book.

Done versus Stop Transfer

Done closes the transfer screen while the service continues in the foreground. Bottom notices report successful imports, skipped duplicate names and failures, and the status explains the result. The ripple indicates an active service. Stop Transfer ends it. The service pauses in the background and resumes when the app returns; keep the app in the foreground during uploads.

If the address does not open

Check that the devices share a local network, the app is foregrounded, Local Network access is allowed, and the address is current. Guest Wi-Fi or network isolation can block access. After a network change, reopen Wi-Fi Transfer and copy the new address.

Library views and categories

Grid, list or minimal views for finding books

Views and sorting

Use the upper-right view button to switch between grid, list and minimal layouts. Choose Recently Read, file size, name A-Z, creation date or rating, then ascending or descending order. When new imports are included, import dates participate in Recently Read; other sorts retain their selected order. Recently opened books follow reading dates, with stable ordering for equal titles or values.

Titles, chapters and search

All three views show the current chapter title and chapter progress. Long grid titles scroll; list and minimal views also show reading status and file size. Search by title, author or original filename. When there are no results, the scope shows category, finished-book hiding and this-import filters. Search all books keeps the query and temporarily includes all ordinary books, including finished books, while excluding vault and trash. Clear or close search to restore browsing filters, or use Original scope to keep the query and return.

Categories and completed books

The left capsule switches between All Books, New Downloads, Unread, Reading, Completed and custom categories. Library Settings manages category order and creation, category visibility, and whether completed books remain in the main Library or keep updating their progress.

Book details and batch actions

Share, categorize, delete or move to Vault

Long-press a book

Long-press a book to resume reading, share its source file, view details or statistics, change its completed status, move it to a category or Vault, delete it, or start Multi-select. Feature switches affect available actions. Shared files use the book title.

Edit book details

In Book information, edit the display name, author, comment, rating and category, then tap Save. On first reading, EPUBs skip recognized covers, title pages, synopses and contents to begin at the body. Saved reading positions are kept. Extracted synopses appear in file details. You can also view format, size, chapter count and import date, or clear this book’s parsing cache.

Manage several books at once

Choose Multi-select in the view bubble or long-press menu, then check books directly. Bottom controls offer Cancel, Select All, Delete (count) and More. More handles categories, completed status, sharing and Vault. Deletion confirmation reflects the Trash setting.

Reading and resuming

Menus, pages, chapter progress and returning

Show and hide menus

Tap the middle of the reading surface, including blank space, to show the top and bottom menus. Tap the middle again to hide them. Turning pages by tap or swipe also hides the menus. Tap regions can be customized.

Menus and reading information

The top menu offers Back, Speech, Auto-read, Notes and Bookmark. The bottom offers Contents, Day/Night, Settings, More, chapter navigation and a chapter progress slider. By default the page header shows the chapter name; the footer shows chapter pages, overall progress, time and battery. More → More Customization adjusts these details.

Return and revisit your earlier position

Use Back or the enabled upward exit gesture to return to Library and save your place. After jumping through contents, bookmarks, notes or the progress slider, Return to Previous Position revisits where you were. Settings → Appearance → Book Animation selects paired opening and returning effects, or turns them off.

Contents, bookmarks and notes

Find chapters and keep your places and thoughts

Find and jump to chapters

Tap Contents at the bottom of the reader. Switch between Contents, Bookmarks and Notes at the top; the left magnifier searches the current tab. Contents offers normal/reverse order, locating the current chapter, first/last entries and Jump to Chapter. Enter a chapter number and tap Jump.

Save or remove a bookmark

The top Bookmark button saves the current page and removes it when tapped again. The downward gesture also adds or removes a bookmark when released past the prompt threshold. The Bookmarks tab jumps to the original text, allows swipe deletion, and filters or sorts by chapter, time or text position.

Notes and excerpts

Select text and choose Notes, or use the top Notes button. Add an excerpt and your thoughts, then save. Existing notes can be edited, deleted, searched and revisited in the text. The Notes tab and notebook offer text export/sharing. Disabling Notes preserves existing records.

Reading settings and typography

Type, colors and six page-turn styles

Adjust the reading appearance

Reading Settings includes brightness, A−/A+ text size, fonts, Chinese script, typography, palettes and page modes. Controls wrap to fit the window and system text size, with clear selection states. Scroll when space is limited. A portrait sheet keeps text visible for a live preview; font, palette and typography details open on the next page. Follow system restores device brightness.

Fonts and Chinese conversion

Font offers basic fonts, available Chinese fonts and More System Fonts. Another device falls back to a system font if the selected font is not installed. Simplified/Traditional chooses Original, Simplified or Traditional Chinese for display without rewriting the source file.

Typography and colors

Typography offers presets and adjustments for line height, paragraph spacing, margins, character spacing, top/bottom whitespace, indentation, weight and justification, plus reset. Colors offers presets and custom background, text and accent colors. Day/Night quickly switches reading palettes.

Choose a page-turn style

The six styles are Curl, Slide, Cover, Vertical, Scroll and None. Curl turns one paper-like page at a time; Slide moves pages horizontally, Cover uncovers the next page, Vertical turns vertically, Scroll connects chapters continuously, and None changes pages directly. Switch whenever you prefer.

Gestures, orientation and spreads

Tap zones for either hand, landscape and iPad spreads

Customize tap zones

Open Reading → More → Customize Tap Regions and drag the boundaries for the left, right and bottom regions. Each side can turn to the previous or next page; the center opens the menu. More Customization includes one-handed mode and tap-to-turn controls. In one-handed mode, both sides default to the next page.

Pull to bookmark or exit

Pull down to add or remove a bookmark is off by default. Enable it in More → More customization, where you can also set upward swipes to exit reading. A hint appears at the bottom while dragging. The action runs only on release after reaching the threshold; returning the gesture or cancelling does nothing. In scrolling mode these gestures work at the start or end of the complete text.

Orientation and iPad spreads

Settings or Reader More selects Auto-rotate, Portrait or Landscape. iPad also offers Auto, Single Page and Double Page. Auto adapts to available space and may use one page in narrow split view. At a chapter end the right page continues into the next chapter; only the book’s end may have no following text.

Other display and interaction options

More Customization adjusts the header and alignment, footer progress, status bar, battery/time, home indicator, menus on entry, haptics, text selection, keeping the screen awake and remembering a separate reading brightness.

Text selection, search and cleanup

Copy, mark, note, share, speak and web search

Actions for selected text

Long-press text and drag the two handles to change the selection. Actions include Copy, Underline, Search, Notes, Share, Speak, Web and Cleanup, with some controlled by feature switches. Tap elsewhere to end selection. If selection is unavailable, check its switch in More Customization.

Marking and removing marks

Underline offers straight, wavy and dashed styles. Select marked text again to remove marks in the selected range. Selecting only part removes only that part. Marks are saved with the book.

Chapter search and web search

Reader → More → Search This Chapter finds keywords in the current chapter using an input above the keyboard and result navigation. Search in the selection menu searches that text. Web offers Baidu, Bing and Google from the bottom, then opens the browser. A web query sends the selected text to that search service.

Filter repeated unwanted text

Choose Cleanup for unwanted selected text to add a rule. More → Cleanup Rules manages rules. Exact text matches are filtered across books without changing source files; deleting a rule restores the text. Avoid common phrases that would also hide legitimate passages.

Text-to-speech

Chinese voices, following highlights and a sleep timer

Start, pause and stop

The top headphones button opens Speech and starts from your current position. Speak in the selection menu reads the selected text. Bottom-right controls open Speech settings, pause/resume or close it. The panel also offers Previous and Next Sentence.

Voices, speed and downloads

Choose an available Chinese voice and adjust speed in Speech. Add More Chinese Voices explains how to download Mandarin, Taiwanese Chinese or Cantonese voices in system Accessibility settings. Return to the app afterward. Availability depends on the system and installed voices.

Follow along, continue and time out

Follow Speech highlights the current sentence and turns to its page with the reading style. Continuous Speech reads the next chapter. A timer stops after 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Returning to Library stops speech; backgrounding or locking pauses it.

Auto-read

Automatic scrolling, speed and stopping

Read automatically

The top Auto-read button starts automatic scrolling and temporarily uses Scroll mode. Bottom-right settings adjust speed and a stop timer; Pause stops it and restores the original turn style. Showing menus or moving to the background pauses Auto-read.

Statistics and calendar

Daily to all-time summaries and shareable reading history

Statistics overview

Me → Reading Statistics shows time, books and active days by day, week, month, year or all time. Browse periods, rhythm, streaks, book distribution and completed/deleted counts. Statistics from a book’s long-press menu or Reader More shows only that book.

Calendar and image sharing

Me → Reading Calendar shows a month of reading activity; choose a day for books, covers and reading time. The top-right share button in Statistics and Calendar creates an image for system sharing or saving. Disabling Statistics preserves history but stops recording new time.

Trash and storage

Recover deletions and clear caches in one place

Restore or delete permanently

By default deleting from Library moves a book to Me → Trash. Its menu restores it or deletes it permanently. Empty All at the top right requires confirmation. When Trash is disabled, new deletions are permanent; existing Trash items remain manageable.

Clear parsing caches

Settings → Storage is the single place to inspect source books, parsing caches, images and record/settings usage and clear all parsing caches. Clearing preserves source files, reading position, bookmarks, notes and statistics; reopening reparses the book. Book Details can clear one book’s cache.

Vault

A separate password and encrypted local reading

Create, add and read

Open Vault from Me or Settings and set a password of at least six characters with confirmation. After unlocking, Add Books selects from Library; Library long-press and batch menus can also move books in. They move to Vault and can be read there without first extracting them.

Locking, password and extraction

An incorrect password shows a bottom notice; enter it again to retry. Vault Settings changes the password and enables biometrics. Backgrounding locks Vault automatically. Long-press a book to extract it to Library or permanently delete it. Extraction preserves saved reading records.

Vault data boundaries

Vault positions, notes and underlines are encrypted locally and excluded from ordinary shelf search, statistics, widgets and new ordinary iCloud sync/backups. Moving a book into the vault does not retract previously synced, backed-up or shared copies. Remember the password; ordinary backups cannot recover vault data after password loss, app deletion or device loss. Remove and independently back up books before migrating.

iCloud sync and backups

Resume across devices and restore separate backups

Resume on another device

On devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Drive enabled, opt in to sync in the app. Leave the reader to save, wait for syncing, then open the same book on the other device. iCloud requires available system services and a network connection, and transfers may be delayed. Locally saved books remain readable offline when the service is unavailable.

Sync Now and service status

iCloud shows network, account and Drive availability and sync results. Use Refresh Status and Sync Now when needed. System uploads/downloads can take time. To avoid competing reading positions, leave the reader on one device before syncing and resuming on another.

Backup and restore

iCloud backup has a separate switch. On app launch or when enabled, an automatic backup is created only if books or reading records have changed and 24 hours have elapsed since the last successful creation. Otherwise it is skipped. Back Up Now bypasses both limits. Creation does not confirm upload; use Refresh Status to check system-reported cloud status. Failures and interruptions keep existing backups and allow retry. Choose a backup to restore missing books. Existing backups are retained without automatic cleanup. Sync and backups can be enabled separately; vault contents, app passwords and device brightness are excluded from cross-device reading. Backups include ordinary trashed books, but not complete app preferences, underline rules or custom profile images. Restore adds missing books without overwriting positions of existing books.

Profile and appearance

Avatar, themes, backgrounds, covers and launch art

Your profile

Tap the profile card in Me or Settings → Profile to edit your nickname and signature and choose a built-in avatar or a personal photo. Save your changes using the page controls.

Themes, dark mode and backgrounds

Preview Color Themes in Settings and save at the top right. Library Background offers colors and patterns, separate custom day/night images and opacity. Leaving with unsaved changes prompts you to save. Dark Mode can be on, off or follow system; reader colors are adjusted separately in Reader Settings.

Book covers and animations

In Settings → Appearance → Book covers, choose a style for books without original artwork. Random covers stay consistent for each book. Tap Save at the top right to apply your preview; leaving with unsaved changes lets you save, discard or keep editing. Book animations below offer 3D opening, system slide, paper lift, soft fade or no animation. Random covers and 3D opening are the defaults. 3D opening expands the shelf cover and closes back into it; an offscreen cover uses a soft fade. Reduce Motion omits animations.

App icon and launch art

Choose an app icon in Settings. Launch artwork offers presets, your own picture, full-screen preview and None. Instant mode on the same page only reopens the last unfinished book still on the ordinary shelf; it does not control whether artwork is shown.

Interface language

Language offers Follow System, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English, plus device-supported automatic translation languages. First use may require a system language pack. Automatic translation handles only app interface text, not book text, notes or titles.

Privacy and offline reading

App Lock, background blur and local data

App Lock

Settings → Privacy Protection allows a six-digit app PIN and Face ID/Touch ID. App lock controls access and is independent of the vault password; salted password-verification data stays in the device Keychain. It does not encrypt the entire ordinary library. Changing or disabling the app PIN requires the current PIN.

Background blur and offline use

Blur When App Is Inactive can hide visible content in the app switcher. Ordinary books saved on your device are readable offline. No novels are bundled, and there is no online book catalog or download service. Deleting the app removes local files; first confirm that ordinary books have a usable backup and separately export and back up vault books.

Home Screen widgets

Continue reading, goals, rhythm and calendar

Choose and add a widget

Settings → Widgets previews Continue Reading, Daily Goal, Reading Rhythm and Calendar, and sets the daily goal and chapter progress display. Edit the Home Screen, add a widget and find Jianjing Reader. Tapping opens the relevant Library, Statistics or Calendar entry.

Refresh and privacy

The system schedules widget refreshes, so changes may appear later. App Lock hides reading details, and vault books never appear in widgets. Turn widgets off in Settings → Feature Settings to hide their settings entry and show an off message in existing home-screen widgets after the system refreshes them. Re-enable to restore them.

Feature customization and release notes

Keep the features you need and see what changed

Enable features as needed

Settings → Feature Settings controls Trash, statistics, calendar, vault, speech, automatic reading, notes, sayings and widgets. Disabling a feature usually hides its entry and preserves existing records. With Trash off, newly deleted books are removed permanently; with statistics off, new reading time is not recorded. Disabling sayings hides the random lines on the library quick panel, Profile and About. Disabling widgets hides their settings entry; existing home-screen widgets show an off message after the system refreshes them. Re-enable to restore them.

Read release notes

Release notes below User Guide in Settings shows the current version number and opens release notes. When reporting a problem, include the version, file format, turn style and reproduction steps.

Troubleshooting

Loading, saved positions, fonts and missing features

Loading fails or keeps waiting

Tap the middle during loading to show menus and return to Library. Use Retry if an error appears. Clear the book’s cache in Book Details or all parsing caches in Settings → Storage, then reopen. If it still fails, check the source in another reader and reimport a readable file.

Saved place or page number changed

Size, font, margins, orientation, spreads and turn style affect pagination; a changed page number does not necessarily mean a lost position. Return normally and reopen to check the text. Wait for cross-device sync and avoid changing the same book’s position on two devices at once.

Missing feature or no speech

Check Feature Customization for missing Statistics, Vault, Notes or Speech entries. For silent speech, check pause state, system volume and installed Chinese voices. For missing selection menus, enable text selection; for taps not turning pages, check tap zones and tap-to-turn settings.
